Decius with Marsyas and Amphilocus
Lot 858
CILICIA. Mallus. Trajan Decius, 249-251. Octassarion (Bronze, 38 mm, 25.60 g, 6 h). IMP CAES CAI CVIN DЄCI TRAINO ЄVS SЄ (sic!) Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Trajan Decius to right, seen from behind. Rev. MALLO COLONIA FELIX / S - C Decius, togate, standing front, head to left, offering small statue of Marsyas to the city-goddess standing before him; behind him, Amphilocus standing left near a yoke of oxen, holding branch in his right hand and crowning the emperor with a wreath; in exergue, boar, all within wreath. RPC IX 1432 (same dies). Rare and with an interesting reverse. A few flan faults, otherwise, very fine.

The coinage of Mallus under Decius is notorious for its blundered legends. Its dies were presumably produced by Greek artists who struggled with Latin, perhaps employees from the nearby mint of Tarsus, which produced a very similar coinage, but with Greek legends
